ABOUT SCLN EVENTS

The Society of Construction Law Nigeria holds regular meetings and organises training events in construction law and related areas throughout the year. Events are held primarily in Lagos and Abuja. Most events are open to non-members at standard rates; members benefit from reduced registration fees. Certificates of attendance are issued for all events for CPD purposes.

Event 1 — Seminar

Title: Construction Contract Disputes Under Nigerian Law

Date: 14 August 2026

Time: 10:00 – 13:00

Venue: Lagos Island, Lagos

Format: Half-day seminar

Overview: This seminar examines the legal principles governing the resolution of disputes arising out of construction contracts under Nigerian law, with particular reference to the courts’ approach to standard-form contracts, the treatment of liquidated damages clauses, and the enforceability of dispute resolution provisions. Speakers will include practising construction lawyers and a senior member of the judiciary. The seminar will include a Q&A session and networking.

Event 2 — Workshop

Title: Adjudication Practice and Procedure: Foundations

Date: 22 September 2026

Time: 09:00 – 16:00

Venue: Victoria Island, Lagos

Format: Full-day practical workshop

Overview: This workshop provides a practical introduction to construction adjudication for lawyers and non-lawyers. Topics covered include: the nature and purpose of adjudication; drafting an effective referral notice; presenting a delay and disruption claim; the adjudicator’s jurisdiction and powers; responding to a referral; the adjudicator’s decision and its enforcement; and how adjudication interacts with arbitration. The workshop includes worked examples and a mock adjudication exercise. Places are limited.

Event 3 — Annual Lecture

Title: Infrastructure Law in Transition: Private Finance and Public Accountability

Date: 10 October 2026

Time: 10:00 – 14:00 (including networking lunch)

Venue: Abuja

Format: Annual Lecture followed by panel discussion and lunch

Overview: The SCLN Annual Lecture 2026 will examine the evolving legal and regulatory framework for privately financed infrastructure in Nigeria, with a focus on the role of the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), the Public Procurement Act 2007, and the lessons learned from Nigeria’s PPP programme in roads, ports, power and healthcare. The lecture will be followed by a panel discussion with senior practitioners and government officials. The Annual Lecture is SCLN’s flagship event of the year and is open to all.
